Time reports, via a source, that Trump spent hours consulting Grok in December 2025 and that its assessment of Maduro as a 'deeply unpopular dictator' whose downfall Venezuelans would celebrate preceded the US invasion and capture of Venezuela's president; corroboration or acknowledgment by the White House or xAI — or a retraction — decides whether frontier-chatbot output directly shaped a US war decision.

What is this?

Time magazine — as recounted by TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Euronews, Yahoo and other second-hand write-ups — reports that at a private December 2025 Oval Office meeting with Elon Musk, President Trump spent hours questioning Musk's Grok chatbot about his presidency and legacy, including how Venezuelans would react if the US captured Nicolás Maduro. Grok reportedly answered that Maduro was a repressive, deeply unpopular dictator whose downfall many Venezuelans would celebrate; after US forces seized Maduro on January 3, 2026 and celebrations followed, Trump reportedly came away thinking Grok was 'ingenious.' The account rests on a single unnamed official said to be present, and the reporting as echoed here does not establish causal weight: strikes on Venezuelan vessels predate the conversation, Grok is said to have assessed rather than recommended the capture, several outlets explicitly note no evidence Grok influenced the operation, and no corroboration, acknowledgment, or denial from the White House or xAI appears in the supplied material. Context snippets note xAI is actively promoting Grok for government and national-security workloads, with Pentagon AI leadership reportedly saying a government version of Grok was used during the Iran war.

Why it matters to Scott

Even at single-unnamed-source confidence, this is Scott's zero-trust-for-decisions argument at maximal stakes: a president reportedly spent hours treating a vendor chatbot's assessment — delivered with the vendor's owner at his elbow — as decision-shaping evidence for the most irreversible act in statecraft, with no authority separation, evidence package, or attestation anywhere in the loop. It's a dated-receipts flagship for the Witness Not Oracle / Decision Authority Infrastructure canon, extends the radar's military-AI epistemic-failure lineage from operators (false ship intel, Maven/Minab) to the commander-in-chief, and touches Grok itself — a model Scott runs in his own dev stack — so corroboration or denial changes how he should write and consult on sovereign decision governance.

# Musk’s AI chatbot Grok reportedly encouraged Trump to capture Venezuela’s president

In December 2025, about a month before the U.S. invaded Venezuela and captured its president, Nicolás Maduro, President Trump had a secret meeting with Elon Musk, [Time](https://time.com/article/2026/10/01/donald-trump-2026-interview/) magazine reports. This was roughly seven months after Musk [left his role](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/elon-musk-leaving-trump-administration-after-efforts-to-slash-federal-budget-through-doge) in the Trump administration at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

During this meeting, Trump “spent hours” talking to Musk’s Grok chatbot, including asking how Venezuelans would respond to the capture of their president, a source told Time. Just [a few months earlier,](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/21/world/americas/us-boat-strikes-crimes-un.html) in September, Trump began ordering U.S. military strikes against Venezuelan boats that Trump alleged were involved in drug trafficking.

People had apparently been turning to Grok asking about the boat strikes and political climate in Venezuela, [as The Atlantic reported](https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/2026/01/grok-did-venezuela-deserve-it/685506/) at the time. So Grok told Trump that Maduro was a “deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall,” Time reported.

When such celebrations [indeed happened after](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/04/world/americas/venezuelan-exiles-maduro.html) the U.S. invaded on January 3, Trump apparently “came away thinking Grok was ingenious,” that source told Time.

So perhaps it should come as no surprise that in June of this year, the [Pentagon’s head of AI](https://thehill.com/policy/technology/5928204-pentagon-musk-grok-chatbot-iran-strikes/) said that the military used Gov Grok to deploy and strike targets during the Iran War.

While Grok isn’t the only AI model serving the DoD (OpenAI also has [an agreement](https://openai.com/index/our-agreement-with-the-department-of-war/) and Anthropic has been in a [back-and-forth](https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/09/court-rules-trump-can-blacklist-anthropic-for-refusing-to-enable-claude-features/) over how its models can be used for military intelligence and in [modern warfare](https://organiser.org/2026/09/12/380123/bharat/islamist-terror-group-houthis-used-anthropics-claude-ai-to-develop-missile-guidance-software-test-rocket-report/)), Grok may become an even bigger favorite under this administration. Earlier this week, the Pentagon [announced that Musk](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/30/pledge-signed-by-president-trump-and-top-ai-leaders-misspells-the-united-states/) and Anduril’s Palmer Luckey have been tapped to [co-lead a study about how advanced technology](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/30/the-pentagon-taps-elon-musk-and-palmer-luckey-to-help-decide-what-the-military-should-do-next/) is, and can be, used in battlefields.
