OpenAI's September 29 DevDay cut the $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan's included usage in half (from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance, and 200 to 100 GPT-6 Pro web chats per week) while launching a new $500/month Pro 500 tier at 25x with Ultrafast inference. Existing Pro subscribers are grandfathered at the old limits until October 29/30 with a one-time bridge credit (~62.5k units expiring Dec 31), but quieter reductions also hit: Codex voice moved behind credits unannounced, and the Pro credit pool now absorbs previously-included GitHub Codex code review. OpenAI has since issued a confirmed banked-reset giveback (via Tibo on X) and users report weekly free usage resets on the $200 plan, signaling active retention management. Defection signals are intent-level (Reddit self-reports, a contested SemiAnalysis 5x value-gap analysis on HN) with no measured churn data yet; the DevDay recap page was materially revised ~48h post-publication with section bodies stripped, including the 16-partner allowance-sharing language, leaving unclear whether this is a messaging scrub or a fetch artifact.

# DevDay 2026 Recap
At DevDay 2026, we’re giving people more ways to take on ambitious work and tools to build what comes next.
Share
DevDay 2026 is our biggest yet, with more than 20 major announcements across ChatGPT, Codex, our models, and entirely new forms of working with AI.
We believe AI can help bring about a new renaissance of creativity and discovery. It should give people more time for what matters to them, more freedom to pursue their ideas, and the ability to do things they didn’t think were possible.
Today, we introduced agents that can take on ongoing responsibilities and new ways for people and AI to work together. We also expanded our commitment to an open ecosystem by opening up ChatGPT as a shared surface where humans and agents can collaborate and where developers can directly launch new native experiences to our collective 1.2B weekly users.
Here’s everything we announced.

DevDay recap revision confirmed via clean re-fetch (stripped 16-partner allowance language); echo.blog captured pre-revision text. New user report (reddit.post.1x2fbhn) shows Pro500 delivers less usable capacity than legacy Pro200, reinforcing that retention machinery (weekly resets, banked resets, expiring credits) is the real enforcement layer. No measured churn, $500 uptake, or stacking data yet. Case remains in holding pattern until Oct 29/30 grandfathering expiry and ~Nov 2 '28 days of Codex improvements' pledge window; discussion fully cooled (0 pts/hr).

New user report confirms Pro500 delivers less usable capacity than legacy Pro200 — direct evidence that the upsell tier may not provide the promised advantage, reinforcing that OpenAI's retention machinery (weekly resets, banked resets, expiring credits) is the real enforcement layer. The case remains in a holding pattern until Oct 29/30 grandfathering expiry and the ~Nov 2 '28 days of Codex improvements' pledge window; discussion has fully cooled.

The DevDay recap revision is now confirmed via clean re-fetch (stripped section bodies including the 16-partner allowance language); echo.blog captured the pre-revision text. No new churn, uptake, or enforcement data since the last look — the case is in a holding pattern until the Oct 29/30 grandfathering expiry and the ~Nov 2 '28 days of Codex improvements' pledge window. Discussion has fully cooled (0 pts/hr).

2026-10-09T06:55:41Z
Two material updates: (1) user reports confirm OpenAI is issuing weekly free usage resets on the $200 Pro plan, demonstrating the cut is being actively managed with givebacks rather than enforced cleanly; (2) the canonical DevDay recap was materially revised ~48h post-publication with stripped bodies (including the 16-partner allowance section), requiring re-verification. The banked-reset giveback (confirmed via Tibo) and weekly resets together show retention machinery wrapping the halving, but measured churn, $500 uptake, and the Oct 29/30 effective-date behavior remain unseen. Periphery not expanding — magnitude-valve reading reflects the Sept 29–Oct 1 burst, not new spread.
2026-10-09T04:52:45Z
evidence attached: reddit.post.1x1aco4 — User reports weekly free usage resets on the $200 Pro plan, adding real-world enforcement context to the case about whether limit cuts are a viable monetization lever.
2026-10-07T21:21:25Z
OpenAI followed the halving with a confirmed banked-reset giveback (secondhand via Tibo-on-X) — retention management now demonstrably spans expiring credits, the buy-back survey, and extra resets, i.e. the cut is wrapped in active churn management, which is the sharpest signal yet that OpenAI itself doubts the cut holds cleanly; it may pre-figure partial fulfillment of the Oct 5 pledge but confirms nothing about it. Meanwhile the SemiAnalysis 5x value-gap drew its first real HN traction (80/91) yet its own thread produced the strongest critique of that figure (3x by token count, reset-accounting error), keeping the defection quantification analyst-tier and contested — the case's meaning is unchanged, its vendor-behavior layer enriched.
2026-10-07T20:34:06Z
evidence attached: reddit.post.1x06a1d — OpenAI's confirmed banked-reset giveback right after the halving is direct vendor response bearing on whether the cut holds without churn.
2026-10-06T10:32:02Z
Fourth submission of the already-held SemiAnalysis 5x value-gap analysis — this Reddit one (7/2, 71%) is the first to clear zero-traction, but it is the same analyst content, not new independent evidence, so the defection quantification stays analyst-tier-only and nothing about the case's meaning moves. Between-checkpoints dormancy confirmed: momentum has flipped to cooling, all movement remains the pledge-tracking thread, periphery (new communities/outlets/implementations) still isn't expanding, and the magnitude-valve reading again prices the already-alerted Sept 29–Oct 1 announcement burst — heat holds low despite the 93rd percentile, which reads one aging thread's cohort-relative speed, not spread.
2026-10-06T09:27:24Z
evidence attached: reddit.post.1wyxnpv — shared external link with case evidence
2026-10-06T08:24:09Z
Between-checkpoints dormancy confirmed: the only movement since the last look is the pledge thread's continued same-community accumulation (82→89) and a third thin resubmission of the already-held SemiAnalysis value-gap analysis (4/2), plus one unverified HN comment alleging Anthropic runs 'extremely tiny' limit A/B tests — context enrichment for the opaque-multiplier theme, not a change in the case's meaning. The magnitude-valve spread reading prices the already-alerted Sept 29–Oct 1 announcement burst (peak ~339 pts/h), not the present: current rate is ~5 pts/h inside one r/OpenAI thread with zero new communities, outlets, or implementations, so heat holds low despite the 'accelerating' momentum label, which reads one thread's local growth.
2026-10-06T08:22:42Z
evidence attached: hn.story.49975345 — shared external link with case evidence
2026-10-06T04:43:10Z
The walk-back checkpoint acquired a watching community — the pledge-tracking thread is the case's only mover (46→82 points, ~88th percentile for its cohort) while the pledge itself still has no first-party confirmation — and the SemiAnalysis value-gap crossed to Reddit and died on arrival (0 points, 38% ratio), leaving the defection quantification analyst-tier-only. Neither changes the case's meaning: still gated on the Oct 29/30 effective date and the ~Nov 2 pledge window. The measured-heat percentile reads one thread's cohort-relative speed, not spread; the periphery (new communities, outlets, implementations) is still not expanding, so heat holds low on the same decomposition as the prior two looks, and the repost of already-held analysis is not material.
2026-10-06T03:33:52Z
evidence attached: reddit.post.1wyotu8 — shared external link with case evidence
2026-10-05T22:05:26Z
The 28-day 'improvements or full usage reset' pledge upgrades from unverified single source to corroborated by independent user discussion — an r/OpenAI thread (46/31) actively tracks it against release notes with elevated errors reported hours into the run — giving the case a live dated walk-back test (~Nov 2) alongside the Oct 29/30 effective date, while SemiAnalysis's 5x+ Anthropic value-gap analysis gives the defection side its first analyst-tier quantification. Attention still concentrates in one fresh Reddit thread (the 92nd percentile reads that thread, not spread; no new communities, outlets-as-coverage, or implementations), so heat holds low — but the case is no longer purely dormant: it now runs against two dated checkpoints.
2026-10-05T20:39:23Z
evidence attached: hn.story.49969927 — SemiAnalysis quantifies Anthropic's subscription value advantage, direct evidence on the user-defection side of whether OpenAI's limit cuts drive churn.
2026-10-05T20:39:22Z
evidence attached: reddit.post.1wyegik — Top r/OpenAI thread (46/31) with lead comment lamenting week-to-week quota instability is churn-sentiment evidence for whether the limit cut holds.
2026-10-05T06:44:26Z
First datapoint on the walk-back checkpoint: a single thin HN submission reports an OpenAI pledge of '28 days of Codex improvements or a full usage reset' — a claimed, unverified reversal mechanism that changes the case from a purely locked-in cut awaiting Oct 29/30 to one with a possible concession clock running. Attention stays dormant (0.17 pts/h vs ~306 peak, 33rd percentile, momentum steady); the magnitude-valve flag again decomposes to the same counted backlash threads accruing single digits plus first-party pages, with no new communities, outlets, or implementations — heat holds low on that explicit decomposition.
2026-10-05T06:23:02Z
evidence attached: hn.story.49961285 — Reported 28-days-of-improvements-or-usage-reset pledge is a direct development on the usage-limit-cut backlash and whether the cut holds.
2026-10-03T15:11:58Z
grounded: converges/high — Converges: OpenAI's grandfathered $200 halving plus the buy-back survey is the second top-vendor instance of the exact limit-cut-with-grandfathering move Scott'
2026-10-03T15:04:29Z
Two days of pure long-tail accrual since the last consolidation: the velocity-spike firing decomposes to the 1wuahc7 backlash thread (now 348/449) crossing its cohort p90 mid-tail, with the rest single-digit increments on already-counted threads — case-level rate now reads 0.0 pts/h at the 10.7th percentile, and the magnitude-valve flag again resolves to counted threads plus first-party pages with no new communities, outlets, or implementations. Case meaning unchanged: a corroborated, locked-in cut in its dormant waiting period, frozen pending the Oct 29/30 effective-date test, with the recap-scrub-vs-fetch-artifact question still the only live sub-check.
2026-10-01T17:52:26Z
Consolidation continues: the only periphery expansion since the cooldown is the low-traction Engadget echo (independent press via HN at 2 pts) — a new outlet class but too thin alone to lift heat; everything else is comment accrual on already-counted threads, so the magnitude-valve/95.8th-percentile spread reading again decomposes to plateaued backlash threads plus first-party pages, and heat holds at low on that explicit decomposition. Case meaning unchanged: a locked-in cut in its waiting period, with the recap-scrub-vs-fetch-artifact question the only live sub-check before the Oct 29/30 effective date.
2026-10-01T16:32:02Z
evidence attached: hn.story.49923383 — Independent press (Engadget) covering the exact $200-limit cut and $500-tier pairing at the center of this open case.
2026-10-01T10:43:41Z
The canonical first-party anchor moved: the DevDay recap was materially revised ~48h after publication, and the Oct 1 re-fetch returns section headings with bodies stripped — including the 'Do more with your ChatGPT subscription' section that previously carried the 16-partner allowance language. Unresolved whether this is a first-party messaging scrub under backlash pressure (an early read on the walk-back checkpoint) or a plain-http rendering artifact; nothing else moved (no new threads, communities, or outlets; velocity ~20 pts/h vs ~295 peak, cooling), so the case's meaning is otherwise frozen pending the Oct 29/30 effective-date test, now with 'has OpenAI begun adjusting the story?' as a live sub-question.
2026-10-01T08:44:10Z
Consolidation into the waiting period: the official-notification quote only re-locks known parameters, and the newest churn data point is a light user — extending the cut's blast radius past heavy users via the credit-bridge mechanics without changing the intent-vs-measured picture — while a lone HN comment claiming trae.ai also cut credits is an unverified wave hint. Attention is now repetitive amplification of what the case already knows, confined to one subreddit (velocity ~6% of peak and cooling; the magnitude-valve flag and 97th-percentile peer reading decompose to counted threads plus first-party pages, HN dead, no new communities/outlets/implementations in 66h), so heat cools to low; the case's meaning is frozen pending the Oct 29/30 effective-date test.

Consolidation cycle: the attached Pro 200 explainer fixes the cut's concrete parameters (20x→10x, 200→100 weekly pro chats, Oct 30, expiring bridge credits) and adds more of the same self-reported cancellations and Claude-stacking, while the velocity spike is the cooling tail of the already-counted $500-backlash thread (311 pts/394 comments — points plateaued, comments still accruing); no new communities, outlets, implementations, or facts. The magnitude-valve and 97th-percentile peer readings decompose to one live subreddit accruing comments on counted threads plus first-party pages, with HN effectively dead (best live thread 13/14), so heat stays medium pending the Oct 29/30 effective date rather than climbing.

evidence attached: reddit.post.1wus2rc — Concrete corroborating detail on the halving (Oct 30, 20x to 10x, $500 Pro 500 launch, expiring credits) plus visible heavy-user churn sentiment the case's resolution hinges on.
2026-10-01T03:26:55Z
The normative '$500/month backlash' thread became the case's largest discussion (363 comments, brief ~2x-cohort-p90 velocity spike), shifting the conversation's center of gravity from the $200 halving itself to the $500 tier as a pricing precedent — a legitimacy fight layered on top of the already-recorded churn intent. But it adds volume, not facts: no new communities, outlets, or implementations, every other counted thread is flat, and overall velocity is ~5% of peak and cooling, so heat stays medium and the case's meaning is otherwise unchanged.

2026-09-30T23:35:01Z
This cycle's marginal evidence is duplicative: a second sighting of the already-recorded OpenAI retention survey (no new scope detail) plus small increments on already-counted threads (largest backlash thread 299→312 pts). No new communities, outlets, implementations, or facts — the valve flag still decomposes to one live subreddit plus first-party pages and dead HN duplicates, and momentum is cooling (~45 pts/h vs ~237 peak), so the case's meaning is unchanged and heat cools from high to medium pending the near-term checkpoints.

The substantive_evidence attachment is a second HN submission of the same episode that died at 1 pt/0 comments — confirming no cross-platform pickup and extending the 'no external pickup' read from the credits thread to the episode as a whole; an outrage contained to the vendor's own subreddit weakens the exit-threat-disciplines-pricing mechanism for now. The velocity spike is another floor-baseline artifact (4.17 vs a 1.0 floor on an already-priced thread), and comment drift elsewhere is trivial.

First evidence OpenAI is cushioning the cut, not just monetizing it: surprise credits (62.5k units, expiring December) reported on multiple Pro accounts alongside the upsell survey — anecdotal and unconfirmed, but it shifts the read toward an actively managed transition, and broad issuance would confound the Oct 29 churn measurement. Heat stays low despite the magnitude-valve flag: the spread is attachment breadth (one live subreddit, a dead HN thread, the first-party recap), not expanding periphery.
2026-09-30T09:24:16Z
evidence attached: reddit.post.1wtzjt0 — Reports of surprise credits on Pro accounts, read in comments as compensation for the halved limits, are anecdotal evidence on OpenAI's softening response and churn dynamics.
2026-09-30T04:30:39Z
Third look in ~9h, zero new evidence: the velocity flag is a floor-baseline artifact (one thread at ~6 pts/h against a floor), aggregate momentum is steady at roughly a third of peak, and the r/OpenAI discussion is repetitive amplification of already-priced facts plus more self-reported cancellation intent — still intent-level, not measured churn. Cooling heat to low: periphery (communities, outlets, implementations) is not expanding, and the real gates — a grandfathering clarification, the Oct 29 effective date, churn/uptake data — are days-to-weeks out and will re-dirty the case as new evidence when they land.

This pass found no new evidence — only comment drift and re-flags of objects already priced last look; the factual core (halving, Pro 500 tier, Oct 29 effective date, upsell survey) already stands first-party confirmed, so state moves to corroborated on that first-party + independent-confirmation substance rather than on engagement. The case's meaning is unchanged: established cut with intent-level churn evidence, outcome gated on Oct 29 and measured churn — periphery (communities/outlets) is not expanding, so heat holds at medium despite top-decile cohort speed.
